Law Enforcement Officer Reciprocity Certification

Nebraska recognizes other jurisdiction's law enforcement certification as a basis for eligibility for obtaining Nebraska Certification.

A reciprocity candidate must apply for, be admitted to and successfully complete the Reciprocity program. An officer is not eligible for Nebraska certification if the law enforcement certificate has been revoked, suspended or is under current disciplinary review.

The standards for acceptance for reciprocity certification are outlined in Title 79, Chapter 3 and Chapter 8. Minimum requirements include:

  • Graduated from a basic certification academy and received a law enforcement certification.
  • Training, education and/or experience that meets or exceeds Nebraska's basic certification training. (This can include continuing education hours.)
    1. Complete and submit the curriculum comparison form to the NLETC.
    2. Submit documentation of all completed training. (Including basic certification, in-service training, continuing education, and other training you want considered to determine eligibility.)
  • The applicant must have been employed for a minimum of one hundred and eighty (180) consecutive days as a full or part-time law enforcement officer. (Reserve or auxiliary status not eligible.)
    1. Submitted the dates of employment from ALL previous law enforcement agencies.
  • Submitted letters from all of the previous law enforcement agencies stating: (Letters must be from the agency hear or hiring authority of the agency.)
    1. The applicant/officer left the agency in good standing.
    2. Dates of employment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform certain physical tasks as explained here.
  • Submit a non-refundable processing fee of $200.00.

In addition to the requirements above, the agency/applicant must submit all of the forms for admission for the Reciprocity certification course to complete the application process. To request fingerprint cards email crystal.hoffman@nebraska.gov.

The cost for the course is outlined on the "Employment of Law Enforcement Officers in Nebraska" tab. Click on the "Cost/Fees" tab.

The Reciprocity course is a shorter course than the full basic course. The course requires the student to attend classes on-site at the NLETC for approximately four (4) weeks. Also during that time, there is on-line course work that the student must complete. Failure to complete all of the training requirements will result in the student being required to attend the full basic course. The course is offered twice in the calendar year, once in January and the other in the fall.

All application paperwork must be submitted to the NLETC within 60 days of appointment as a law enforcement officer with a Nebraska Law enforcement agency. If applying as a non-law reciprocity candidate all documentation and forms must be submitted no later than one hundred twenty (120) days before the start of the Reciprocity program.
